No love, no dreams, oh my lady
The bells were ringing on that day
I'll not be back, I'll not be seen
I am the soldier sent away

Lost in a cold forgotten war
A war for some forgotten cause
Because of some forgotten words
About something I'd never heard

No love, no dreams, oh my lady
The bells were ringing on that day
And I remember autumn leaves
Sweeping through the empty streets

And when at last I heard the news
About the war I did not choose
I saw the flowers fade away
I saw love, in disarray,
Fade away

What do we learn across the years?
No-one sees and no-one hears
Loveless gods are looking on
But I'm stuck and there's no way through
And when you hear the news of what happened
You won't be able to believe the stories
No-one conceived the stories
They were just evil ploys
Stuck, I repeat, stuck, don't repeat!!!

What do we learn across the years
When no-one sees and no-one hears?
Loveless gods in silence stay
Looking on with cold disdain

No love, no dreams, oh my lady
In this lonely no man's land
There's no respite, there's no reprieve
Just the war lords' bloodied hands

So when at last I heard the news
About the war I did not choose
I saw the flowers fade away
I saw love, in disarray,
Fade away

Commentsby Midnight Oil. Alan Simon: Sydney: I was met and warmly welcomed to Australia by Bones, Midnight Oil's bassist. There then followed three very happy days, full of friendship and close collaboration, in the company of some very impressive musicians. There were no speeches and there was no pretence; the members of Midnight Oil are true friends of the Earth. I only hope that "No man's land" is not the last track they record together. In the meantime, they've certainly offered us a wonderful gift. Jim, Rob, Martin, Bones and Peter, I'm extremely happy to have shared this moment with you.
