On a bus from Chicago with a bag under my seat,
And the smell of the rain coming up from the street,
I was watching the world as it spun by my window,
And I felt my every sin go rolling under my feet.
And that old familiar pain began scratching at my heart.
A feeling that a part of me was left back at the start.
But the place where it all started is a blur where I'm standing,
With a string of lost companions many miles apart.
The horizon before me will change on a dime,
And the shadow I cast will grow longer with time,
I'll only keep on riding till I'm tired and swollen,
But this bus'll keep on rolling til it leaves me behind.
And I feel bad about leaving, but worse if I'd stayed.
Getting harder to lay there in that restless bed I'd made.
And I'd only let her down, of that I'm almost certain,
So it's best to leave her hurtin,' than see her betrayed.
So many things have happened that I'll never understand,
Many reasons behind my taking solace in the land.
It's been seven years ago, 'still can't talk about her death,
Tho her name is on my breath and her ring is on my hand.
Every now and then I see a girl who has her eyes.
And I try to settle down, but in due time I realize
A woman can't compete with a resurrected memory
That's liVing here within me, telling time-sweetened lies.
