A week ago I saw him out with you
You in your red, tight-fitting dress
Him in his leisure suit
His friends were drinking, talking much too loud
And I remember how we used to shun that kind of crowd

Chorus:
Walk on by me when we meet, sweetheart
Tell the world you're glad we had to part
Say the way we loved was just a lie
We know better, you and I
We know better, you and I

I'll just pretend we never knew those times
If that would only satisfy someone inside your mind
But when you play the jukebox, play that song
The one about the girl who called me "baby" all night long

(Chorus)

1984 Screen Gems-EMI Music, Inc., BMI/Black Sheep Music, BMI Paul Craft: A different version of this was released on RCA as my first single in the 70's when Chet Atkins was producing me. It came on the country charts at #98... not with a bullet but with a small, grey tombstone. I later talked John Starling's wife Cynthia, into talking John into recording it. Then we all talked the label into releasing it. "The girl who called me baby all night long" is from a song by Harlan Howard, the best textbook a songwriter student could ever hope to encounter (and get to be friends with).
