Classic British Blues with choice rarities from P.G.
Review written by Anonymous, March 15th, 2005 Over the course of forty songs on two CDs we can trace the evolution of John Mayall and with him mid-sixties British Blues and the coming of age John McVie, Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor. John McVie had the longest run with Mayall and plays on a total of twenty-seven tracks on this collection. Eric Clapton, the most experienced at the time he partnered with Mayall, is represented by seven tracks, including four from the Bluesbreakers "Beano" album. Although he was with Mayall for less than a year, Clapton's sound and approach truly matured under his guidance. Next up, Peter Green. The first single cut with Mayall was "Looking Back" - a slice of British pop rock, complete with horns, that Peter adds a nice guitar break to, but it hardly hints at what awaited listeners on the B-side. "So Many Roads", the first of many Otis Rush numbers that Peter Green would cover over the years, offers the first hints of the reverb laden emotional style he would begin to polish and hone while with the Bluesbreakers. This is followed by the B-side of the his second single with Mayall, "Sitting in the Rain", a highlight with a relaxed vocal from Mayall and wonderful finger-picking from Green over a gentle clip-clop rhythm tapped out by Anysley Dunbar on a guitar case! The next four tracks featuring Green are from the album "A Hard Road". The standout is of course "The Supernatural", Green's first true classic. A personal favorite is "Dust My Blues" with the wonderful variations that they wring from the familiar Robert Johnson riff. Disc two starts off with three tracks from an EP cut with Paul Butterfield - Green only gets showcased on the first, "All My Life" and the Clapton influence is evident. You can it also in the B-side of Green's last single with Mayall, "It Hurts Me Too". It's A-side, "Double Trouble", another Otis Rush slow burner serves as Green's diploma: his style has been perfected and he's ready to move on - he came back to this track in '69 using it's distinct bridge for "Before the Beginning". Mick Taylor comes on board for with four tracks from "Crusade" and then Green returns for two more tracks, "Jenny", which is custom made for Green's spare playing and "Picture on the Wall" - a true pleasure, with Green on acoustic slide (something we never got to hear enough of). Six more songs featuring Taylor close out the set. A great listen, a handy compilation for Mayall fans and along with "Thru the Years" a must for those interested in the roots of Peter Green.
