CD Reissue Notes:

The Scaffold emerged from Liverpool's early 1960s bohemian scene, the same environment that had nurtured The Beatles. The McCartney brothers linked the two, Paul's younger brother Mike, under the pseudonym McGear, teaming up with entrepreneur John Gorman and poet Roger McGough in 1963. Their stage show, fusing softly satirical sketches with music hall bawdiness, was a hit at the Edinburgh Festival and formed the basis for several successful tours through the rest of the decade.

McGear was the musical arranger and the extrovert Gorman a skilful comedian while McGough provided the lyrics; he also contributed dialogue to the "Yellow Submarine" cartoon and featured in an acclaimed poetry anthology The Merseysound with fellow Liverpool beats, Brian Patten and Adrian Henri.

The Scaffold's best-known song, however, was a cover version, the 1968 Christmas number one "Lily The Pink" being derived from an American folk ballad about a 19th century chemist. They also wrote and performed the theme for the hit TV show "The Liver Birds" ("Are you dancin'? / You askin'"? / I'm askin' / I'm dancin'"), fronted a children's TV show "Score With The Scaffold" and, in the early 1970s, performed in a touring revue called Grimms with, among others, Neil Innes and Vivian Stanshall of the Bonzo Dog Band, the group to whom they are most often compared.

The Scaffold's versatile output during the boom years of UK pop culture stands as a testimony to the qualities of a long-vanished age.

Lord Woodbine

Emerging from the same early sixties Liverpool bohemian scene that nurtured The Beatles, The Scaffold comprised Paul McCartney's younger brother Mike, former GPO engineer John Gorman and poet Roger McGough. The group enjoyed a series of clever sub-psychedelic pop hits and will be forever remembered for the definitive novelty singalong "Lily The Pink", the Christmas UK number 1 single in 1968. This concert recording is a fascinating period piece, rerorded in London at the height of their popularity.

This album is often referred to as simply "Scaffold" (since the original LP just lists the band name on the front) or "The Scaffold" (since they are listed as "The Scaffold" on the back just as most bands in the 60's were, by more conservative journalists/DJ's/TV show hosts/concert poster & album jacket printers and other media members because they were used to groups having "The" proced the band names which most bands had been in previous years but that became less common over time). However, the back of the original LP (and all over the CD reissue followed by "1968") lists under the band's name in big letters "Live At The Queen Elizabeth Hall".
