DAVE MASON AND JIM CAPALDI (THAT'S ME) WRITING THESE FEW LINES FOR WHO EVER IT NEEDS TO REACH ABOUT THE COLLECTION OF LIVE TRACKS PRESENTED HERE. DAVE AND I WROTE OUR FIRST SONG IN LIFE TOGETHER IN HIS BEDROOM, AS TEENAGERS IN WORCESTER, ENGLAND.
A LOT OF ROAD HAS BEEN COVERED SINCE. FOR ANYONE READING THIS, WHO DOES NOT ALREADY KNOW, WE WERE FOUNDER MEMBERS OF THE BAND TRAFFIC, WITH STEVE WINWOOD AND THE SADLY MISSED CHRIS WOOD.
THIS IS AN UNUSUAL REUNION AS DAVE AND I HAVE NOT WORKED TOGETHER IN THIS WAY SINCE THE WORCESTER DAYS. WHILE I WAS GUESTING WITH HIM, LATE IN 1997, ON SOME OF HIS OWN SHOWS WE REALIZED THAT INSTEAD OF COMING TOGETHER WHERE WE LEFT OFF WITH TRAFFIC IT FELT MORE LIKE WHEN WE WERE IN OUR FIRST BANDS BACK IN THE EARLY DAYS. IN SOME WAYS WE HAD COME FULL CIRCLE AS ALL THINGS IN LIFE MUST.
WE RECORDED THIS ALBUM JUST AS IT HAPPENED DURING THE 40,000 HEADMEN TOUR BETWEEN FEBRUARY AND APRIL 1998 IN THE U.S.A. MY MANAGER JOHN TAYLOR CAME ALONG TO OVERSEE THE TOUR AND MIX THE LIVE SOUND. THE MIXES CAME DIRECT TO A PORTABLE DOMESTIC DAT RECORDER FROM HIS LIVE SOUND BOARD MIX AND THERE WERE NO OVERDUBS OR ANY REPAIRING WHATSOEVER.
WE WERE ABLY ASSISTED ON STAGE BY STEVE THOMA ON KEYBOARDS AND BACKING VOCALS AND ALSO ALEX DRIZOS ON BASS GUITAR AND BACKING VOCALS. WE REALLY HAD SOME FUN PLAYING TOGETHER AGAIN, THE ENERGY THAT WE ALWAYS HAD IS WELL CAPTURED ON THESE RECORDINGS AND WE COVERED AS MUCH AS WE COULD FROM OUR VARIOUS MUSICAL PERIODS - HOPE YOU ENJOY IT.

A wonderful set of "live" rock classics.
Review written by Tom Donaldson, January 4th, 2005 For Dave Mason and Traffic fans, this recording is a must. Mason & Capaldi are as vibrant in this 1998 recording as they were over 30 years when they were an integral part of the legendary band Traffic. It is great to hear the metamorphoses of these great rock standards. You will hear no finer versions of songs like "Feelin' Alright?", "Only You Know And I Know","Dear Mr. Fantasy", "40,000 Headmen", etc.,than you will hear on this recording. The rich vocals that Mason supplies, on some Traffic classics, will leave you scratching your head and wondering why he didn't sing these songs originally. This cd was recorded with a very tight 4 piece band. There are no overdubs as it is recorded absolutely live,(a Mason trademark). I was very surprised at how good a percussionist Capaldi is. Also, Mason's guitar work shows he is one of the better guitar players of our time. Add this cd to your collection, and it will soon become one of your favorites.
Great music shines through not so great sound quality

The sound quality isn't exactly perfect but some pretty good performances are present like the Capaldi co-penned number popular for the Eagles a few years ago "Love will keep us alive", a longer than usual guitar solo on "The low spark of high heeled boys", a piece of "Dear Prudence" is included in "Shouldn't have took more than you gave" & "Dear Mr. fantasy" sounds like the way Dave performed it with the Mac on tour. The rest are fun nostalgic run throughs of old favorites which makes this collection Dave's best solo release since probably "Let it flow". One gets the feeling that it would've rocked a little more had it been more of a high profile affair and as I say, the sound quality doesn't help but still a very entertaining concert piece nonetheless.

Recorded in 1998, the Traffic guitarist and drummer teamed up again and proved that they can still cut it live. The tight rhythm and sharp riffs, as exemplified by the Creamy "Pearly Queen" are delightful, and the duet, "Love Will Keep Us Alive", is tinglingly beautiful. The set mingles rich acoustic balladry with posturing uptempo rockers, as well as fine, string-backed harmonies, such as "We Just Disagree". The classic "The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys" is back-to-basics and works well. There are boogie piano passages and some favela music on "FeelinŽ Alright" - guaranteed to have you finger-drumming your desk - and "All Along The Watchtower" is suitably feisty. The Purpley crescendo of a furious "Dear Mr. Fantasy" climaxes a quality set, without a chink in the sonic armour. (Tim Jones, Record Collector Magazine, August 1999)
