Legacy CD Remaster Notes:

Love 'em or hate 'em, Warrant is here! Unabashed. That was the sound and vision of an L.A. band knowing it deserved your attention. Warrant is that band. Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich is the album. Originally released in 1989, DRFSR presented a young band on fire. Continuing on a path blazed by fellow L.A. bands Poison and Motley Crue. Warrant's raucous debut garnered them a legion of fans and a trail of critics. DRFSR documents the rise of one of rock's most outrageous bands - that delivered the goods with every note. A true metal classic.

Riches and more...

They were ahead of their time. Rock critics may snicker upon reading the prior sentence in conjunction with the band Warrant. But let's take an objective look at this: In the new millenium, the biggest stars of pop music - hip-hop acts, R&B superstars and rock and rollers - are unabashed in their enthusiasm for wealth. Name dropping brands of cars, champagnes and clothes in lyrics and interviews isn't uncommon. In fact, acting rich is almost a pre-requisite for credibility in pop music today, even when an artist hasn't yet earned his or her first royalty check. Video directors often dress-up the extras - and the artists with borrowed clothes and rented jewelry in order to ensure a suitably glamorous look. Things that used to seem like a breach on "credibility," such as licensing songs to commercials, endorsing products, accepting corporate tour support, hanging out with society-types with names like Trump and Hilton... in the new millenium, it's all part of the game of pop stardom.

Of course, it has always been acceptable for rock stars to eventually become rich; they just had to act as if their wealth had come about thanks to some sort of happy accident. New artists were trained to say things like, "It's not about the money." or "Even if I'm dirt poor. I'll always be happy if I'm able to play music," Either they had no idea what it was actually like to be poor, or they were just lying. But still, few artists have the audacity to say, "Yeah, I love rock and roll, and I hope it makes me a millionaire."

And then came Warrant.

This reissue that you're holding in your hands is their debut. And you'll notice that it is titled Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich. Warrant was in hot pursuit of the "bling-bling" lifestyle, long before it was so coined, and before it was fashionable for rock stars to do so.

You've got to give Warrant some credit for having the audacity - indeed, the balls - to come up with that title for their first album. They were honest about their expectations. There would be no "We don't care about the money, man" statements from these guys. Tons of bands make remarks like that, and when it later turns out not to be true (since most people do care about money) the fans are disappointed. Warrant wouldn't disappoint their fans in such a way; fans rooted for them to do well. Their stance was similar to that of today's hip-hop fans: "Don't hate: congratulate." Warrant's "congratulations" would arrive in the form of a bunch of hit singles, and a multi-platinum selling debut.

Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich put Warrant on the path to a life of rockstardom, something fantasized about by, oh, nearly every teenager in America. On the other hand, Warrant pointed out that they knew what it was like to be in the fantasizing position, with the album's leadoff track, "32 Pennies." Jani Lane sings "32 pennies in a Ragu jar, that's all I've got to my name." Then, rather sweetly, he adds "I love her and she loves me, to the pennies it's all the same." Was anyone wondering why Warrant had more female fans than some of the more macho rock bands of the era? It wasn't just their looks or their accessible sound... here's an inside secret: sometimes that kind of talk is more effective in courting females than demanding copulation outright. Of course having monster ballads like "Heaven" and "Sometimes She Cries" didn't hurt, Even in the strutting bravado of "Down Boys" (yet another hit single, by the way), Jani ends a quarrel with his babe ("You got a lot of nerve to call me cheap, even though it's true") by pleading "I don't care where we go tonight. just take me along with you."

Sadly - for Warrant, anyway - the musical climate was about to change rapidly, with punk-influenced Guns 'N Roses, heavier and faster Metallica and, of course, alternative rock bands like Jane's Addiction and Alice In Chains quickly making Warrant (and their brethren) look passe. But, much to the chagrin of their detractors, Warrant still pack clubs and play sold out package tours year after year, even without the radio play and MTV attention they once enjoyed. And one good reason for that is the songs on this album.

Bekka's powerful voice can't be heard
Review written by John Fitzgerald, December 27th, 2004

Bekka is listed as 1 of 2 people who do "additional backing vocals" on this album. Although "Heaven" is dedicated to "Bekka & all the fans who sang along at all our shows", unfortunately, it's not broken down as to who sings what on each song. As is usually the case with recordings of this type, there are block vocals on the bridge & chorus sections so it's hard to hear Bekka which was most disappointing to me. The album seems formulamatic for the pop metal genre although "Sometimes she cries" & "Heaven" are fairly decent power ballads in contrast to "So damn pretty (should be against the law)" which displays red hot energy. Not a bad record, but not really my style.
