On September 20, 2005, Madison Square Garden hosted "From The Big Apple To The Big Easy," New York City's Concert for the Gulf Coast, to support the long-term relief and rebuilding efforts following Hurricane Katrina. The live concert features new Orleans musical legends joined on stage by many of music's biggest names.

The Gulf Coast hurricane tragedy humbled all of America. On those first days of September 2005, millions of people around the world watched in horror and helplessness as the true scope of the storm's devastation became clear.
Together, we wanted to help the people of the Gulf Coast reclaim their lives, homes, and communities. And as New Yorkers, we also felt a special sense of responsibility as recipients of the outpouring of help and good will in the aftermath of our own September tragedy, September 11,2001. The generosity of America during our time in need demanded that we respond to the Gulf crisis as strongly as possible.
Thus, From The Big Apple To The Big Easy was born.
Our goal for this unprecedented concert was to raise funds for the Gulf Region's long-term relief efforts. Through the outstanding participation of some of the legends of rock 'n' roll and New Orleans music, the commitment of hundreds of people behind the scenes, including many displaced by Katrina themselves, the effort generated millions for the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund, Habitat for Humanity, MusiCares, and the Children's Health Fund, to assist in their vital work.
We are also proud that From The Big Apple To The Big Easy provided an opportunity for all of us to celebrate the unique culture and music of New Orleans, underscoring the important role that the city has played in our nation's musical history. We are hopeful that this special DVD, proceeds of which will continue to be directed to relief and rebuilding efforts, captures the magic and celebration of that unforgettable night, which will surely be remembered as one of the greatest in the history of Madison Square Garden.

I was stranded in the Park Lane Hotel a week after Katrina hit when Jay Marciano, of Madison Square Garden Entertainment, and Ken Ehrlich found me. Cablevision and Madison Square Garden had decided to put together a benefit concert for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Elton John had signed on and others were calling in.
A Concert for New Orleans - celebrating New Orleans' musical legacy to the world - went from idea to reality in less than 20 days of non-stop frenzy. Mr. Jim Dolan put all levels of his Cablevision/MSG team top priority on the case; Ken Ehrlich (while producing the Emmys in L.A. two nights before!) slammed his celebrated Ken Ehrlich Productions Grammy team into harness to make possible the DVD you are holding now, and our Festival Productions Jazz Fest krewe from New Orleans (at the time formally from New Orleans) sprung into action.
We gathered together 63 of New Orleans most legendary musical greats - from Dave Bartholomew to Aaron Neville to Allen Toussaint to Irma Thomas. We found them all over the country in the places they had evacuated after the flood - all still in the shock of their personal losses of home and possessions. Amidst the tragedy, they came to New York.
What resulted, the show you are about to enjoy on these two discs, was truly a night of magic, a triumph of joy over sadness, and the greatest show this side of Jazz Fest itself.
