Thiry-five years later . . . (4/5.04/5.04/5.04/5.04/5.0)
Review written by Anonymous from Imperial Beach, CA USA, August 5th, 2006

I consider myself lucky, finding this album for $3 at the resale shop. My hope that Mason's and Elliot's songs would be fine has been realized; well worth the time it takes to listen to 10 "new" old songs. Its full of wonderful harmonies and the guitar and organ playing of a past era. We'll enjoy this record for its sweetness and our nostalgia.

Hard to Believe How Long This Has Been Overlooked (5/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.0)
Review written by Mark S. Hicks from Englewood, FL, April 19th, 2006

This record was never given a chance when it was originally released. Recordings that are understated take more than a quick listen and then write a review. And once an album is labeled, that's it. However, anyone who liked Dave Mason's or Cass Elliot's (previous or later) work will find as much or more of the passion, soul, beauty in the writing and vocals as anywhere else. My belief is that the quality of the Blue Thumb recording was mediocre, even for the time. If it was re mastered and cleaned up maybe it would be more apparent to fans of Cass and Dave that everything they have ever loved about them is right here: in spades.

Dave Mason is the master (4/5.04/5.04/5.04/5.04/5.0)
Review written by Jeffrey Hunt from Pequannock, NJ USA, January 22nd, 2005

I just saw Dave in concert this past Saturday night in Atlantic City. Still going strong at 60 years of age! He did a wonderful rendition of "Too much truth, too much love", which is the eighth track on this album.... obviously, without Mama Cass. My favorites on this album are "To be free" and "Sit and wonder", but I must comment on "Here we go again" which is a Cass Elliot solo performance. The words probably wrap up the story of her love life... but are beautifully put (she in fact wrote the song). But you can't help being entranced by her awesome voice on this song!

This is the most underrated Dave Mason album (4/5.04/5.04/5.04/5.04/5.0)
Review written by Tom Donaldson, December 20th, 2004

I first bought this album nearly thirty years ago. I was intrigued by the combination of Dave Mason & Cass Elliot. Although Cass & Mason collaborate on a few songs, make no mistake that Dave Mason is the guiding force behind this album. The harmonies on this album are tremendous and far exceed any vocal harmonies on any Traffic albums. Mason's talents as an acoustic lead guitarist are brought to the forefront on songs like "Walk to the Point" and "Glittering Facade". My favorite song on the album is "Too Much Truth, Too Much Love", which features great vocals along with great guitar work. Of the ten songs on this album, 5 or 6 are masterfully crafted, and the remaining songs, although not great songs, are easy to listen to, and after hearing them a few times, will grow on you.

Many interesting ideas but somewhat of a let down (3/5.03/5.03/5.03/5.03/5.0)
Review written by John Fitzgerald from Peabody, MA, USA, December 20th, 2004

The opener "Walk to the point" is the best song with it's grabbing harmonies and strong hook with tasty acoustic guitar fills but a couple of songs here deserve mention. "To be free" is a different version to the version that appears on "Headkeeper" but "Here we go again" is a different song to that with the same title that is on "Headkeeper" and curiously only one of two songs that features Mama Cass on lead vocals in a prominent way, the other is "Something to make you happy" and no, it has no connection to "Dear Mr. fantasy"! One can't help but feel sad that by all accounts Cass was happy with the results of this partnership and was looking forward to more pairings in the future which were not to be. Still worth getting but like others, I probably had high expectations.
