I'm waiting on the countdown
Sitting in the shade
Things about to turn around
How the madness fades
Oh, I've been waiting on the countdown
Things about to turn around
And now I'm out of the lost and found
Just waiting on the countdown
Time slips away
Oh, this feeling lingers
Right here I'm going to stay
I've been waiting on the countdown
Things about to turn around
And now I'm out of the lost and found
Just waiting on the countdown
So I'm sitting in the shade
Under the dreaming tree
Now the madness fades
Right here I'm going to be
Oh, I've been waiting on the countdown
Things about to turn around
And now I'm out of the lost and found
Just waiting on the countdown

    Fan Interpretation »

This song was on Lindsey Buckingham's Out of the Cradle CD. The CD was released after Buckingham left Fleetwood Mac. Countdown could be perceived as the song telling the world that Buckingham would be alright without Fleetwood Mac. Now on with the interpretation.

I'm waiting on the countdown
Sitting in the shade
Things about to turn around
How the madness fades
Here, Buckingham states that he's on his own. There's no more Fleetwood Mac to him. He's able to do what he wants. "Sitting in the shade" could mean that he's relaxing - not feeling pressured to do music anyone else's way. He knows he's at a turning point, in both his life and his career. Things are going to get better.

Oh, I've been waiting on the countdown
Things about to turn around
And now I'm out of the lost and found
Just waiting on the countdown
Buckingham is restating that he's ready for his life to change. Things as he knows it will be changing. He's "out of the lost" being his musical creativity with Fleetwood Mac and into the "found" meaning his freedom to be musically creative. He's been waiting to do what he wants.

Right through your fingers
Time slips away
Oh, this feeling lingers
Right here I'm gonna stay
Oh, I've been waiting on the countdown
Things about to turn around
And now I'm out of the lost and found
Just waiting on the countdown
Time goes by quickly. Bad things might have happened in the past, but he's not going to let that bother him. Lindsey has everything in his reach. He's on an emotional high. He can do anything he wants and doesn't have to fight to get his ideas across.

So I'm sitting in the shade
Under the dreaming tree
Now the madness fades
Right here I'm gonna be
Oh, I've been waiting on the countdown
Things about to turn around
And now I'm out of the lost and found
Just waiting on the countdown
He's taking it easy, finally doing things his way. He's following his dreams. Dreams that he always wanted to do, but couldn't with Fleetwood Mac. The madness of arguing about who's songs were going to do what, who was doing something wrong or who was going to change something is now done. It's just Lindsey Buckingham doing what he wants to do. He's staying right here. Nothing or no one can tell him that what he's doing is wrong (or that it's too different or not his style). He's finally at peace with the most important person in his life, himself. Lindsey has found the emotional and creative freedom that he's been longing for. He waited on the countdown and it has finally come.

(The interpretations to these lyrics were compiled through discussions on the message boards of the Penguin, The Ledge. It is entirely possible that the artists had something completely different in mind.)
