CommentsA holiday standard. Still, hardly any song gets picked on more than this one. It just comes and goes with the season. I finally really "heard" it last year when Little Richie sang it on a Christmas episode of the old Dick Van Dyke show. I know. That's pretty weird. Now when I hear the song, I'm right there, back in time, in Bethlehem. Most of our energy goes into whether this baby could possibly actually be the king. The Drummer Boy doesn't question that. His faith is intact. But he is humbled and feels he has nothing to give that's worthy of a king. "But I could play something on my drum??" I left the rough vocal because it's the one of the most emotional moments I've ever experienced singing a song. Pa rum pa pum pum. I am that little Drummer Boy.
