Crying in the morning...trying to be strong
Waiting for the spring to turn into the fall
Love don't mean what it says at all
And destiny says that I'm destined to fall...

Enchanted...you thought you saw something in my eyes
Enchanted...it's a shame that you wanted me...
You didn't try...

Why the face...oh darling...
Was it my darkness...shadow light
I mean to cause no trouble for you
That is the story of my life...

Enchanted...you thought you saw something in my eyes
Enchanted...it's a shame that you wanted me
You didn't try...
Enchanted...wo it's just a voice thru the night
Enchanted...well I hope you make it...

You were gone...you were gone from me
When I remember someone...I remember their dreams
In those dreams...that no one knows of My destiny says that I'm destined to run...

Enchanted...Ooo...you thought you saw something in my eyes
Enchanted...it's a shame that you wanted me...
You didn't try...
Enchanted...well it's just a voice thru the night
Enchanted...well I hope you make it...

Enchanted...well...I hope you make it
Wo...wo...wo...
I hope you make it

Possibly no one word so singularly describes Stevie Nicks' career as well as the word enchanted. Her music was enchanted, her fans were enchanted, and Stevie herself was enchanted. But sometimes that same enchantment was more of a hindrance than help. Constant enchantment can color one's perception, make things seem as they really are not. But there is a thrill to being under one's spell, a sense of safety, beauty and wonder.

This is what quite probably led Stevie to name her solo career's box set Enchanted. The song itself is up-tempo and upbeat, describing a time in Stevie's life when her world was colored with magic-and for Stevie, that coloring never entirely left.

Is the state of enchantment a good thing or a bad thing? In this song, it's a good thing that ends up pointing someone in the wrong direction.

Cryin' in the morning...tryin' to be strong
Waiting for the spring to turn into the fall
Love don't mean what it says at all
And my destiny says that I'm destined to fall...

The lyrics to this song were written back in the Buckingham Nicks era. Lindsey was touring and Stevie had met someone else, another man, but it didn't work out. With that knowledge, the meaning of the song changes somewhat. Stevie is waking up every morning crying-but she knows that she must be strong and get on with life. She has to make herself get up out of bed. Why is she so sad? Is it because she feels that her relationship with that other man could have been a better, healthier, happier one than her one with Lindsey? Is she missing Lindsey and wishes he was home, so that she wasn't in a position to encounter other men? But she is making the effort to be "strong." Why does she need the strength? Is it so she is strong enough to leave Lindsey? Or is it so that she is strong enough to refuse the advances of other men? These basic questions emphasize one of the big questions raised by this verse: Does Stevie want to continue her relationship with Lindsey, or is she ready to end it and move on? She is losing faith in love; she is starting to doubt when men say they love her. But the final line in this verse throws something new into the mix-"And my destiny says that I'm destined to fall..." Stevie has seen her fate; her destiny has been revealed to her. And it told her she was going to "fall." Fall where? Fall in love? Fall out of love? The connotation from the song is that she is destined to not make it in life-which is not a very hopeful destiny.

Enchanted...you thought you saw something in my eyes
Enchanted...it's a shame that you wanted me
You didn't try

The "other man" was overwhelmed by Stevie. This was before she was famous, so it wasn't her fame that intimidated him, but simply her, what Sheryl Crow described as "the whole energy package." He was enchanted by her, bewitched by her. So the enchantment was a good thing-every woman likes to feel that they have the power to enchant their suitors. But that enchantment intimidated this man, although he wanted her, he made no serious attempt to go after her.

Why the sad face...oh darling
Was it my darkness...shadow light
I mean to cause no trouble for you
That is the story...of my life

He regretted not taking a chance with her; he was saddened by his lost window of opportunity when Lindsey returned home. Stevie is asking him why he is sad though; he made the choice not to go after her. She wants to know if he was scared off by her "darkness". Maybe that darkness is supposed to be the fact that she was already in a relationship. Maybe it was what attracted him to her-the way she was in between, not black but not white, rather, shades of gray. The upbeat music is almost taunting at this point. But Stevie apologizes in a way-she didn't mean to interfere in his life and make him unhappy. That just seems to be part of who she is-she has the ability to make men fall in love with her. She doesn't always mean for it to happen, it just does.

Enchanted...you thought you saw something in my eyes
Enchanted...it's a shame that you wanted me
You didn't try
Enchanted...wo it's just a voice through the night
Enchanted...well I hope you make it

Again, Stevie reminds him that it was his decision not to pursue a relationship with her, not the other way around. The line "it's a shame that you wanted me" is almost a little sarcastic; Stevie really has very little sympathy for him, because he chickened out. The "voice through the night" is quite probably Stevie's- as she and Lindsey struggle to make their living by their music.

However, it might be the other man's- all she has left of him is the memory of the sound of his voice. She adds the hope that he can make it through this situation and go on to live a happy and fulfilling life.

You were gone...you were gone from me
When I remember someone I remember their dreams
In those dreams that no one knows of
My destiny says that I'm destined to run

In this final verse, Stevie mentions that after their relationship fizzled out, he disappeared from her life. She realized that she had lost her chance with him, and knows that he knows that he lost his chance with her. She remembers their "dreams." So she has to know their dreams in the first place, in order to be able to recall them. She knows what he wanted, what he had hoped for and dreamed of. And in a way, the fact that he wanted to pursue her could possibly be flattering to Stevie-after all, it's always a compliment when you find out that someone likes you. But Stevie has her own dreams. And through them, she learned that she was destined to always run from a relationship; that her relationships would always end at some point in time.

An interesting fact concerning the lyrics of this song is that Stevie used them again in 1994, in her song "Destiny." The refrain is different, but the verses are the same.

However, "Destiny" is definitely the sadder song of the two, with a much slower pace and a much more melancholy sound to her voice. At this point in time, her destiny is still a mystery. She knows what it says, but no one yet knows what will happen. In 1994, Stevie had a pretty good idea of how her life was going to turn out. She had left Fleetwood Mac. She was addicted to Klonopin. And she had a few more relationships with men under her belt-each of which had obviously ended. So it seemed that maybe her destiny, in her "dreams", had been right-she was destined to run. But that didn't mean that she couldn't still try to make it. Because, after all, she has made it, with the support of her friends and family and the support of a huge fan base. She has survived through it all-and she is still, twenty-five years after she and Lindsey Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac, enchanting her fans everywhere. As Stevie says in her Enchanted booklet, "it has been enchanting. I wouldn't change a thing."

(The interpretations to these lyrics were compiled through discussions on the message boards of the Penguin, The Ledge. It is entirely possible that the artists had something completely different in mind.)
