CD Reissue Notes:
Flexing the lean blues muscle that earned them a solid reputation among musical purists, Fleetwood Mac, on their landmark 1969 release Then Play On, also demonstrated a songwriting and performing skill that would eventually catapult the band into world class status. The LP spotlights several indispensable Fleetwood Mac classics, including Peter Green's nearly nine-minute opus "Oh Well," one of the most innovative, and oft-imitated blues/rock workouts in modern music. Other standouts include the Hendrix-influenced "Underway," the fierce "Rattlesnake Shake" and the subtly shaded "Although The Sun Is Shining."
Fleetwood Mac was built around the formidable talents of guitarist Peter Green and the rhythm section of John McVie (bass) and Mick Fleetwood (drums). In 1967 the threesome left John Mayall's pioneering Blkuebreakers and, with Elmore James enthusiast Jeremy Spencer, played their first gig in the summer of that year at the British Jazz and Blues Festival. The quartet's stunning blend of blues classics and Green originals landed them a recording contract. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1968, was an immediate smash, hovering near the top of the British charts for over a year. It yielded the hit single "Black Magic Woman," later a hit for Santana. "Fleetwood Mac" was followed by Mr. Wonderful (1968), which featured a horn section and keyboard work from a singer/songwriter named Christine Perfect (the future Mrs. John McVie). Taking a sharp stylistic turn, the band then released one of its most memorable singles, the stately "Albatross," which, with graceful rhythms and plaintive harmonies, came as something of a surprise to the group's blues loyalists.
Then Play On, released in the fall of 1969, featured a new addition to the original line-up, guitarist Danny Kirwan. Also sitting in on the session was Perfect, who had sung with Spencer Davis and had been a member of another British blues outfit, Chicken Shack. Then Play On reached the Top 5 on British charts and was the group's first solid commercial success in America.

Apparently Jeremy Spencer did not play on this, accordng to other webcasts....and most of the songs are by Danny Kirwan and the great strident guitar you can hear is again mostly by Danny Kirwan not Peter Green.
The lyrics often let the album down as they are frequently too trite and sentimental - but the overall feel and structure is very powerful - exemplified by Coming your Way with its great drum part coordinating with the guitar.
This is awesome!! Review written by Dante\' Swinton, September 5th, 2006
I hadn't really heard much of the Peter Green era of FM until this album, and I discovered how great it was as well. I LOVE the percussion on Coming Your Way, and Oh Well, Although The Sun Is Shining, and Rattlesnake Shake are my favorites. I'm only 18, but I wish people would play these styles of music much more often on the radio...
My All Time Favorite Album Review written by Stephen Andrachek, December 20th, 2005
A friend loaned me this album when it first came out. He had many albums and said that this was one of the heaviest albums he had. I took it home and listened to it and didn't much care for it. I listened to it again and for a third time and really didn't like it. I put it away for about two weeks, got it out and listened to it one more time and it really grabbed a hold of me. I couldn't believe how good it sounded now that I was somewhat familiar with the songs. Now, some 36 years later, this album still gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. From the first song, "Coming Your Way", with the intro two guitars calling to and answering each other and the driving Fleetwood Mac rhythm section, to the last song, "Before the Beginning", I like them all, especially the melancholy "Closing My Eyes" which is followed by "Show Biz Blues" with its wicked opening and closing slide guitar riffs. But the whole album is excellent all the way through and the songs seem to slide into one another like they were made for each other. I'm sitting here listening to the album as I write this review. It still sounds just as good as it ever did. To say I highly recommend it would be a gross understatement.

The most diverse and accomplished album by the Peter Green-led lineup. Features some wrenching, introspective originals that draw from both blues and progressive rock, highlighted by the doomy British hit single "Oh Well." (Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide)
