"The Last Fillmore West Live Concert"
After a stint with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in the early sixties and with John's encouragement Peter Green set out to build his own blues band. Brought in to play bass was the dynamic John McVie who was also an ex-Mayall Bluesbreaker. Danny Kirwan was brought in to play rhythm guitar and as well brought the group some of his excellent original songs on which he also sang lead. Jeremy Spencer added a new depth to British blues sounds with his dynamic Elmore James style slide guitar work and raw vocals. Jeremy also along with Peter were devout Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis fans and always included some of their rock 'n' roll classics on each performance. Mick Fleetwood added just the right backbeat behind this "lot" as Peter called them and they made some of the heaviest music to come out of England in the mid sixties.
These rare previously unissued performances captured on January 4th, 1970 at Bill Graham's legendary Fillmore West on Market Street in San Francisco give you a chance to hear this legendary group in action. Not only are we treated to over seventy minutes of wild rollicking blues and rock 'n' roll but as well we're treated to extended versions of many of the groups classics. Sadly just a few short weeks after these performances Peter quit the band making these recordings even more historically important. Not long after Peter left Jeremy would decide it's time to move along as well. New members were added to the group not long after, the most important being the eye catching Stevie Nicks on vocals and her guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. With the new members who also included Christine Perfect (Mrs. John McVie) came a new more commercial rock sound which continued making hits right into the ninety's.
These rare live performances will no doubt be of special interest to the band's legion of fans worldwide along with the group's early Blue Horizon studio recordings (issued on EPIC Records in the USA) as there are sadly only but a few recordings on the world market that feature this legendary band live.

Great gig but poor sound quality REALLY hurts
Review written by John Fitzgerald, November 11th, 2004 I should say straight away that this is a great live album but one can't help but feel that the poor sound quality on this disc makes it hard to enjoy these recordings even though they are good enough to deserve the attention they seek as this set would rival the Boston Tea Party sets as essential live Mac had it been done under proper recording circumstances. Peter Green leads the way here with more than half of the tracks featuring Green (though "Oh Suzanna" shouldn't really count as that was just a 30 second tune up style piece that probably would not have even earned it's own track number on any other disc though a stomping 30 seconds is to be had within track number 11 on the CD. The epic 19 minute "Rattlesnake shake" may seem lackluster to the 24 minute Boston Tea Party versions in comparison but it does stand up very well on it's own. Again though, better sound quality could've and probably would've made a world of difference on this track alone, let alone the rest of the disc as well. A highlight for diehards is "Got a mind to give up living" rarely heard elsewhere done by FM and it hits the spot on the "Worried dream" slow burner arena. Jeremy thunders through a standard "Baby please set a date", an above average "Madison blues" and "Can't stop loving" (AKA "Oh baby") really gives the Tea Party counterpart a run for it's money here as a rousing opener. Danny, though with only two tracks, is not to be overshadowed with his call and response boogie "Like it this way" and the lost treasure of a song known as "Loving kind" only heard on the Tea Party tapes before this by FM fans, again gives the Tea Party version a good battle. Apparently there are two versions of this CD out there, those with a version of "Long tall Sally" and those without it. I have yet to be able to track down a copy with LTS on it for my collection but I'm sure the standard of performances is kept high via another Little Richard rocker that does appear on all versions of this release which never disappoints in "Jenny Jenny". In the end, if you have most of the Mac recordings and you're trying to plug up the holes, you're best to track this one down before you get other "inferior sounding" discs like "London live '68" & "Live at the Marquee" but be warned about the sound quality of this disc annoying you until no end and constantly leaving you wishing "If only this had better sound quality (how high it would be on the Mac ladder)...".
