A nice album worth listening to. Review written by Anonymous, October 18th, 2004 This was a follow up to Mason's self-titled album. The cover of Buddy Holly's "Crying, Waiting & Hoping" is good but not quite as dynamic as Mason's cover of Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home To Me" which appeared on Mason's self-titled release a year earlier. The title track, "Split Coconut", is a good instrumental, but I prefer the instrumental, "Side Tracked" from the "It's Like You Never Left" album. "Long Lost Friend" is a great song, featuring a great guitar lead, and is my favorite on this album. "You Can Lose It", "She's A Friend" and "Give Me A Reason" are also excellent songs, the latter featuring Jim Krueger on lead guitar. "Save Your Love" is a funky, upbeat song which received considerable air time. Although, I don't believe this album is quite as good as some of his other releases, it's still a good album, and worth listening to.
An atmospheric blend of musical stylings Review written by John Fitzgerald, October 18th, 2004
This is one of my favorites of Dave's Columbia albums and it's a great improvement on the 1974 selftitled release. We are treated to Mason's masterful six string work on the opener and the closer. The former is the title track which is nearly an instrumental while the latter, "Long lost friend" ends with a tasty solo and features The Manhattan Transfer to good effect on backing vocals as does a cover of Buddy Holly's nugget "Crying, waiting & hoping". My highlights overall are "Sweet music" featuring a dated but likable keyboard part and the sing a long "You can lose it" but there's lots of great hooks here with a wonderful assortment of musical variety, it's easy to find a treasure on here no matter what your tastes are.
