No matter how hard she tried — and she tried very, very hard — Kim Carnes couldn't get either Voyeur or Café Racers, her two follow-ups to Mistaken Identity, into the consciousness of the audience that flipped for "Bette Davis Eyes." There were some hits along the way, but they were minor ones; as a matter of fact, the biggest single she had since "Bette Davis Eyes" was "What About Me," a single recorded with Kenny Rogers and James Ingram that reached fifteen on the pop charts. Clearly, it was time for a change, and for 1985's Barking at Airplanes, she broke from convention, stepping up to the boards to co-produce the record. This was the change that was needed, as it resulted in a cohesive, consistent album — the best she had made since Mistaken Identity. It wasn't a drastic shift in sound, so perhaps it's surprising that the record is markedly better than either of its immediate two predecessors, but the key is focus. Although there are elements of post-new wave pop, arena rock, adult contemporary, and dance evident throughout the album, they're fused together into a sleek, insistent sound. This isn't entirely different from what other artists of her style and era were doing at the time — this, indeed, sounds like what adult-oriented pop of the mid-'80s sounded like — but it fits Carnes very well, not just because her great voice sounds ideal in this setting, but because she does this music very well. Sonically, this record simply sounds good - all the elements work well together, and the production is clean, even, and appealing - but Barking At Airplanes is particularly successful because the songs themselves are quite good. "Crazy In The Night (Barking At Airplanes)" is her catchiest single since "Bette Davis Eyes" - a surging, paranoid arena-rocker that deservedly became her biggest hit since that breakthrough, but that wasn't the end of the good songs. "Abadabadango" was also a minor hit, but songs like "Don't Pick Up The Phone (Pick Up The Phone)" and "Rough Edges" (blessed by the guitar of Ry Cooder) could have reached the charts, as well, and even the filler is given an appropriate sheen that helps hold the album together. And that wasn't the end of the good material either, as the two previously unreleased bonus tracks "I Am A Camera" and "Forever" on this CD illustrate (a fine solo version of her Barbara Streisand duet "Make No Mistake, He's Mine" is also added to the end of the record). For all of her hard work, Carnes was rewarded with a moderate hit — an album that reached 48, while spawning a number 15 hit in the title track. It might not have been up to the standards of Mistaken Identity — it was closer to Voyeur standards, really — but it still qualified as a welcome comeback, and it has stood the test of time as one of Carnes' best records. -- Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Strong instrumentation but weak hooks
Review written by John Fitzgerald, October 4th, 2004

Lindsey plays and sings on "Begging for favors (learning how things work)" and it has some aggressive urgent vocals from Lindsey but like many songs here, the downfall is that the songs included on this record suffer from a lack of a good catchy hook. A song like "Bon voyage" would be good but sounds like a carbon copy of "Coming around again" by Carly Simon. "He makes the sun rise (orpheus)" has an intriguing instrumental build but the weak tune mars the occasion. There is much impressive guitar and synth keyboard work throughout the album which will earn this record an average rating and fans of Carnes may like it more than that but on the whole I've tried to like this album but every time the level isn't as high as I'd like it to be.
