A game nobody survives. But Schwarzenegger has yet to play.

The year is 2019. Television is now ruling people’s lives. The most popular "audience participation” game show is "The Running Man” - where convicts can win pardons instead of ”parting gifts” by defeating murderous henchmen known as "stalkers.” The stalkers haven’t had much of a challenge lately...until Ben Richards (Schwarzenegger) comes along.

Notes From The Director Paul Michael Glaser:

Filming The Running Man was an interesting challenge. I had met with the Producers, Tim Zinnemann, Rob Cohen, and Keith Barish a few months before they were to begin. I had just finished my first feature, Band of the Hand, where I had learned the differences in responsibility and control between being a television director and a feature director. I had also learned the importance of preparation. I asked how much time they were designating for prep and thought it to be too little. I passed. Two weeks into their shoot, they were two weeks behind schedule and had to let their director go. On a Thursday they asked if I was interested in taking over the film. I asked how long they would shut down. They said, "the weekend."

I took the job because it was not only a "win-win" situation,...if the film was bad, I wouldn't be blamed, and if it was good, I'd get the credit, but it was also a story that I had been attracted to since I first read another screenplay that dealt with game shows and the American public's penchant for violence. The combination of television's exploitation of violence and the absurd lengths to which game shows could go was, I felt, a virulent mix. I could utilize my ability to shoot action, and at the same time enjoy my sense of humor in the absurd. Stephen King had created a situation that I could easily relate to having done my stint in the action-exploitation side of television: "Starsky and Hutch."

I had started my film directing education during "5tarsky and Hutch." I learned only as one can in television, how to think fast, shoot fast. It was a great training ground for this particular job, in that I had to hit the ground running, inheriting existing problems and the inevitable future ones from an ongoing production. I was also extremely fortunate to have Tim Zinnemann as my producer. He had mounted the entire film, anticipated many of its problems, drawing on his years of experience. He became not only a great support but a terrific collaborator. Stephen de Souza, who had adapted the novel, was on hand with his abundant supply of one-liners for Arnold. To Rob Cohen, who was first interested in me and later hired me, I also owe a debt of gratitude for his vote of confidence from one director to another.

There were a number of things that I/we changed in the course of filming. Some were a result of trying to get on schedule, others out of a need to clarify our storytelling. The "wrestling" sequence with Jessie Ventura with the special effects putting Arnold's face on another character was an added scene, as was the helicopter sequence showing what really happened to Ben Richards to the studio audience.

All in all, I was very fortunate to have had the degree of thoroughness that was executed in the preparation of the film, as well as the support from everybody, including cinematographer Thomas Del Ruth and his crew.

Insight through satire is what connects people to The Running Man, and is probably responsible for its longevity. We have an ambivalent relationship to this thing called "Television." It invades our lives with a degree of intimacy only barely touched on by its predecessor, radio. We love to be distracted from the fear of our daily lives. We become hugely invested in the amount of information, visual and intellectual, that television stimulates us with. And yet, we have an unfulfilled need to be moved, to be transported, to have the level of our consciousness raised, which television is hard pressed to do. It is not a larger than life theatrical medium, where we can create heroes/gods in our image and let them struggle against death and their/our fear of death, and through them, reaffirm our ability to overcome our own fear. True, we can watch stories on the TV screen, however, in that the image is not larger than life, the heroes cannot be larger than life in any way except perhaps their worldwide visibility and the resulting celebrity such exposure confirms upon the actors who play them. The stories become little more than information.

There is an unease that this creates in us. It is exacerbated by the amount of selling and pandering to a fantasized quality of life that, in our core, we know isn't real and by the speed and frequency with which these images and stories are fed to us. The unease comes from the reality that none of this has any real impact on raising the quality of our lives, and a quiet anger that there are those who actually get rich off exploiting our yearning to find some truth, some haven, some aspiring experience of love that can help us feel better in our mortal struggle. So a "Running Man" skewers that world, allows us to laugh at it and holds it up to ridicule while giving us the very mind/eye candy we have come to believe we need and like,...this film strikes a chord with people. Understandably so. It is one of those rare moments when the exploiters, wittingly or unwittingly, have delivered something that actually rings true. For that, I am grateful for having been a part of this experience.

"Set in 2019, an ex-cop framed and convicted of mass slaughter, becomes a contestant on the most popular game show in which convicted felons race for their lives in decimated L.A. in hopes of a pardon. Adapted from a Stephen King novel.

In the 21st Century, the government frames a good cop for a bloody massacre. The authorities take him into custody and then give him an option: he can spend the rest of his life in jail or participate in a "gladiator" type television show that usually culminates with the death of the protagonist. The wronged cop agrees to the challenge, teaming up with a pair of revolutionaries and an innocent young woman to survive the game and overthrow the corrupt system." (Summary from BigStar.com)

Some have speculated that Mick is playing himself in the future (regardless of the name "mispelling") though it is unclear if that was the intention
