Best version of Landslide (5/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.0)
Review written by Anonymous from Newton, MA, November 15th, 2010

Rarely does a live recording outdo the studio version. But this version of Landslide makes me pause every time I hear Stevie ask and answer her own question: Can I handle the seasons of my life? I don't know.

just perfect (5/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.0)

could not believe that fleetwood mac could be that good after all these years of separation. they were even better than in their early years. christine seems to be a bit bored (as we all know now she was bored actually) and stevie is better than she has ever been. but one could already feel this would not last long. christine lacks passion. thanks to this wonderful site here and to all people who help to make it.

It is great to see fleetwood mac shine again (5/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.0)

It is great to see Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks willing to come back to Fleetwood mac to reunite once again. It's great to see the band make up and put there differences to the side and leave it into the past. It is always good to hear the songs live which made us feel good when we hear them in studio form off the albums. I liked how they added four new songs to the lineup and to see the band go back into the studios feeling good together as a group. This reunion I'm glade happen because it looks like Fleetwood Mac will be working together again into this centry and keeping the music going.

It's perfect...just like Rumours (5/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.0)

Everything about this record was amazing. The only flaw was that there was 5 songs that got cut from the final track listing.

The album opens up with the best version of The Chain I believe I've ever heard. In fact, it's my favorite song off the record. Dreams is wonderful...and Christine's song Everywhere has been updated a little bit. The vocals are great. I'm So Afraid is jaw-dropping. Bleed to Love Her is a great new one. Big Love is even more jaw-dropping. Landslide is wonderful. My Little Demon is odd, but awesome. Silver Springs really shines on this album, with great dualing vocals from Lindsey & Stevie. You Make Loving Fun is perfect. Sweet Girl is nice. Go Your Own Way ROCKS! Tusk is very cool, and Don't Stop is well...it's Don't Stop!

This is one of my top five favorite albums of all time. The chemistry between the band is obviously stronger than ever. Fleetwood Mac has never sounded better.

Live albums or reunion tours don't get much better than this. Each performer contributes a great deal to this album. Stevie is incredible breathing new life into her rock classics like "Landslide" and "Silver Springs." "Rhiannon" is very moving and she wraps her voice around each lyric like a lifeline. Lindsey is just as amazing. he totally rocks out to "I'm So Afraid." "Big Love" is the standout on this album. It improves greatly on the original making it the true rock song that it is. Christine is in fine form. Her voice hasn't even changed since the early 80's. "Temporary One" her new song is very impressive. It is much more in the rock formula than songs like "Everywhere" and "Hold Me" lack. The real gems are on the video. Stevie delivers a tour de force of "Gold Dust Woman" and she seems to be having a lot of fun with "Gypsy." Christine gives a haunting randition of "Songbird." Mick is electrifying on all the tracks, especially with his bring out the dead pounding on "Go Your Own Way" and "Rhiannon." A truly spellbinding album. Rock on Fleetwood Mac!

Perfection! And is that a dash of punk I hear? (4/5.04/5.04/5.04/5.04/5.0)

The band that defined an era of rock n roll and influenced bands like Counting Crows, Nirvana, Screaming Trees, Hole, Bikini Kill, The White Stripes....(need I go on?) reconvenes for a dynamo of sheer power and classic rock n roll. Buckingham certainly shows the world what an under rated guitar god he is. "Big Love" is the stand out for him. It is a complex song with intricate guitar work. "I'm So Afraid" never ceases to amaze. His "Go Your Own Way" recaptures the fire and passion that made it a top ten hit back in the 70s. Nicks almost steals the show right out from under the band. Her witchy ways are here transformed into a matronly wise earth mother. She sings a moving version of "Rhiannon" that seems to let her audience know that she, like the song, has evolved into something better and more grounded. On the video you get to see "Gold Dust Woman"--on that songs she rocks out getting all the frustration from her coke days out in the open with earnest conviction. "Silver Springs" is a beautiful songs about love and loss. The harmony is improved by all three members singing with thoughtful passion. McVie seems in tip top form as well. Her "Everywhere" and "You Make Loving Fun" sound as bouncy and peepy as they did years ago. She has the best knew song too-- the edgy rocker "Temporary One." Fleetwood drums like someone half his age and J. McVie does some of his best base work. It is not hard to see how this band, along with punk rock and Led Zeppelin influenced the grunge rock movement of the early nineties. Not so you say for this "soft" california rock band? Let me explain. Stevie Nicks is clearly one of the most influential women of rock. When bands like Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland and L7 came out they were infused with feminity--something every other woman in rock has seemed to miss. Stevie Nicks celebrated her girliness and still rocked hard. Courtney Love--The Queen of Grunge to Cobain's King--cites her as her primary influence. Love states in a Rolling Stone interview that "Well, she's a major influence on me. She's the spangly, sparkly Gold Dust F--king woman." How can that be for hard core punk bands? Listen to the music and see the how sincere it was--just like alternative rock. While mainstream, they always seemed to deviate from bands like The Eagles and others. They were never a commercial band it just happened to them--just like grunge did. The sheer desperation of their lyrics prove this. Even bouncy tunes like "Don't Stop" deal with depressing topics. Nirvana recorded "Nevermind" in the same studio as "Rumours." What does that say?? And how did Fleetwood Mac always sit so well with the underground when they were suppose to be the enemy? ANd what do you think "Tusk" was all about? They totally rebelled from commercial success!! So like Zeppelin, Sabbath, AC/DC, and punk rock--they too inspired grunge rock. Thank you.

This stayed in my car until it wore out. (5/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.0)

On purchasing this little gem I wasn't expecting much. All too often reunion albums are disappointing in the extreme. 'The Dance' proves the exception to the rule, with a performance from Fleetwood Mac that must have been been absolutely spellbinding if witnessed live. Much of the energy of the concert has seeped onto the recording, notably from the closing track, USC Marching Band and all. An absolute must for any dedicated FM fan.

The Dance DVD is a really great concert (3/5.03/5.03/5.03/5.03/5.0)
Review written by John Slivinski from Houston, Texas, August 16th, 2004

This is the best live concert I've ever had the privelege to watch on DVD. Though there are noticeable recorded background vocals, Stevie and Christie sound in top form. Stevie can't quite sing as high as she used to, but it doesn't detract. I couldn't help thinking that they sounded so good that they must have rehearsed endlessly for this concert (I'm wondering if these songs are all from the same show because there aren't really any noticeable mistakes). Lindsey Buckingham does a solo perfomance for Go Insane and Big Love that is so emotionally charged that I was blown away. He is truly one of the best guitarists in the world. He plays most of the show without using a pick, as usual. Bleed To Love Her is also my new favorite song from this disc. Landslide is another top song from the disc, and this performance will leave you with wet eyes (I was feeling like I invaded Stevie and Lindsey's privacy during this song). Every song is top quality and flawlessly perfomed. Lindsey's vocals are a little rough throughout, but it doesn't take away from any part of the show. The only song I didn't care much for was My Little Demon. They could have left this one off the disc. It just isn't up to the standards of every single other song here. If you are a Fleetwood Mac fan, and love both Christie's songs and Stevie's songs, then you have to buy this concert video. Besides their voices being WAY better than I thought possible for a live perfomance, they are both stunning to look at (Christie looks better than she did 20 years ago, no kidding). I borrowed the DVD from a friend, and decided after one viewing that I would have to purchase it. The cd from this tour isn't as good as the DVD, because it is missing 5 songs from the DVD. Though the upcoming 2003 album and Tour lacks Christie McVie (I feel this is a terrible mistake and wish Christie would have decided to do it), I will still go to see them!

I was a Fleetwood Mac fan who never experienced them 'new' and it was thought that there was as much chance of new stuff from them as there was from the Beatles. The Beatles released a new song, and then came The Dance. In truth, I am a Lindsey fan and 'discovered' him when he did Out of the Cradle. It has always amazed me that no one ever talks about his guitar playing in the tones of absolute awe that I do. Without a doubt Lindsey is one of my favourite guitarists and imagine my excitment when I bought a new Fleetwood Mac album with my favourite line-up ( sorry Pete, I love you but. . ).

There are some jaw dropping guitar solos from Lindsey, one of the most impressive being I'm So Afraid (I love the guy who yells out 'Go Lindsey'). As usual he floors me with his finger picking and Landslide is an absolute treasure. Stevie is brilliant with Silver Springs hitting that other-worldly spot that only she can reach. It is also good to see some new stuff.

Brilliant performances from everyone. If you like Fleetwood Mac you simply cannot live without this album. Close your eyes, put them on the stage and go to your own personal concert because these guys really know how to lead the dance.

Class! (5/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.0)

I went to watch Fleetwood Mac in December 2003. I have most of there albums however this particular little gem is without a doubt my favourite. When I went to see Fleetwood Mac in the winter of 2003 I was highly excited. The bus trip there took 2/3 hours but it was great. My favourite song of the night without a doubt was big love by Lindsey, however he is also my favourite member of the band so I will be a little bit one sided. Because non of the albums have this version of big love on I bought the dance, and the first 3 tracks are simply magnificent. The chain guitar interlude by lindsey is simply played to perfection, and I love it to bits. Dreams is great by Stevie Nicks and Everywhere by Christine is magnificent. The whole album is wonderful and I would recommend it to anybody. I must mention before I close my review that my favourite song on the whole album is You make loving fun. OH, by the way on this album you see John Mcvie on vocals - thats how different it is and Fleetwood Macs concert chemistry is simply BRILL!!!!!!!!!!!

I TOTALLY LOVED IT!!!!! (5/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.0)

The Mac Is Back! (5/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.0)
Review written by Lambros Zelios (madelson@mdlab.com) from Sydney, Australia, July 10th, 2004

The good thing about this album is that you won't have to put up with critics expressing what a disappointment this album is in comparison to the unsurpassable "Rumours". I can't believe some of the reviews here at the penguin about how other Fleetwood mac albums don't measure up to the unsurpassable "Rumours".

This album is a remarkable achievement for the Mac because of several reasons. The phenomenal line up, consisting of Buckingham and Nicks and Mcvie, that brought the band so much success in the US and around the world finally reunite. And after so much this band went through you would think they would never reunite but they did. They would overcome their personal differences and record the best live album in their career. Also it is an opportunity for the mac to re-invent some of the tunes that gave them worldwide success. These rerecorded live songs from their hit albums "Fleetwood Mac' and 'Rumours' sound better than they did twenty years ago. For instance we have an extended version of Rhiannon. Simialr versions of this track were performed live twenty years ago at live concerts across the world but this is the first time we get to hear a similar version recorded for this live album in it's entirety on cd. Stevie Nicks' voice is in top form and her songs are just fantastic. Dreams and Landslide sound so good. I am not that keen on the live version"Silver springs" as I prefer the original 1976 studio version intended for the "Rumours" album.

Buckingham's new songs are the strongest of the new tracks and it further emphasises what are great loss he was to the band when he left back in 1987. Not did the Mac lose an extraordinary guitarist but they also lost a talented songwriter and able producer. His solo acoustic guitar version of "Big love" just emphasises his ability to create songs the way he wants them to sound. An apparent indication of his proficiency as a producer. Anyone would be amazed at the complete contrast of the two versions of Big love. I think it is so cool that he can take the synthesiser pop electric guitar oriented Big love and to srip it naked to just a raw acoustic guitar version. And his guitar playing is very stylish. A very distinctive guitarist. Whenever you hear Lindsey Buckingham play guitar especially acoustic guitar, you know it is Buckingham. I also love the new acoustic version of his solo hit "Go insane". I just love this version. It is so much better than the original studio version back in 1984. Someone submitted a review on the penguin complaining about this song being included on the very best of compilation but I am glad it was included on the album because I just love this type of style that Buckingham is conveying in his songs. I think Buckingham was going through some sort of phase with how he was performing or composing his songs. I think it is really good. Also "my little demon" is a real rocker and this just emphaises the versatility of Buckingham's style ie he can perform rockers as well as raw acoustic stuff. "Bleed to love her" is typical of Buckingham's more sensitive side and it is typical buckingham and fleetwood mac that we have been exposed to in the past. It fits in well with this repertoire on this album.

Christine Mcvie's reinvention of Everywhere is also very exciting. This country version with the banjo type instrument playing just reminds how different "Tango in the night" was to their other albums and how much the music industry had changed in the late 1980's when the Mac re-emerged with" TANGO IN THE NIGHT".

To sum it all up this album fulfilled a lot of thngs for the Mac. Firstly it brought back Lindsey Buckingham after his ten year hiatus from the band. It was also an opportunity for this line-up to record live again as that was not possible for the Mac back in 1987 to promote "Tango in the night" as Buckingham had many personal issues such as his health. I presume that he was suffereing from some sort of illness for a while and that a long tour was something that he could not handle. Also it was an opportunity to record a very high quality live album as their last 1980 live album was not exactly the best well produced recording of live songs. Witness the recorded live version of "Rhiannon" of the 1980 live album. It doesn't exactly do the song justice. The 1980 live album is not a bad album but this album certainly surpasses it considering that the technology in the music industry has dramatically changed over the many years. It also reunites one of the Mac's greatest line ups. Sadly, it is also the band's last recording with Christine Mcvie. The Mac as we know and want is back!
