Many Mayall compositions but not much improvisation (3/5.03/5.03/5.03/5.03/5.0)
Review written by John Fitzgerald from Peabody, MA, USA, March 20th, 2005

Those expecting a "Beano" album may be disappointed as Mayall's debut album seems to be in a more R & B style with little in the way of lengthy solos and the very primitive manner in which the set was recorded as the liner notes describe (by draping the microphone across the street and down the ceiling of the venue) one can imagine that this doesn't help the sound quality but it could be worse and some numbers are very fresh like the urgent harmonica led instrumental "Runaway" and the unusual atmospheric "Heartache". "Crocodile walk" & "Crawling up a hill" have more power here than their
studio counterparts and what soloing there is works well on the final jam "Chicago line". Many other Mayall albums should be purchased before this but it's not bad at all.

An exciting album, genuinely live (5/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.05/5.0)
Review written by Roger Dean from Hanwell, London UK, March 20th, 2005

Having not listened to this album for nearly forty years, the tracks took me right back to the sixties. Great audience, bags of atmosphere, good sound... considering we had a tiny PA system (but we were LOUD!) My solo's could have used a bit more imagination, but there were no retakes ... one shot and that's it !! Anyway ... my kids love it. Roger Dean (guitar Bluesbreakers '64)

Thrilling! Evocative & individualistic 20th C r & b ! (4/5.04/5.04/5.04/5.04/5.0)
Review written by Phoenix from Aberdeen, Scotland, March 20th, 2005

Cannae believe ye hinnae listened tae this album in 40 years Rog!
You remind me of John Hammond , a regular guest at the Lemon Tree , up here , where I once managed to hold his attention long enough to mention that his first two albums 'Big City Blues' and 'So Many Roads' were profoundly influential on an impressionable young loon. He wis chuffed , I'm delighted to say but amazed me when he declared that he himself no longer had these albums in his possession! Equally , 'Live at Klooks Kleek' was thrilling for me and still my favourite Mayall album. Cheers!

claustrophobic club blues at its best (4/5.04/5.04/5.04/5.04/5.0)
Review written by Mark Fitzgerald from Stockholm, Sweden, March 20th, 2005

John Mayall's live debut is an enthralling smoking trail through the blues.Despite a slightly below par recording quality this performance doesn't really suffer as Mayall and cohorts blast through with an enthusiasm that mirrors the sweaty, smoky club scene of the 60's dare to daydream and you may just find yourself there ! classic stuff!
